Linking Instructions

We are happy for you to link to our website or any page, this page explains what you can do and how to achieve it.

Our website is designed to run as either single pages or as a part of a frame system, showing a banner, clock and contents in addition to the pages. The whole system includes a variety of indexes allowing information to be easily found, and this is available to your users however you link.

You can link to the website, and to sections of the website, in these cases the full frame version is displayed, but you are also welcome to link to individual pages or to link our pages into your own framesets.

You will find our individual pages have a button line at the top, so users can access our full system or break out of any frame arrangement you use if they wish. The quick links on the left go into the full system, then to the indexes and on the right to non frame (individual) pages. Some pages have a second line when they are a part of a section allowing movement within the section.

You can

  • Link to individual pages
  • Link to sections or the main website. Below is a table showing some available sections, more are being added all the time.

Linking to individual pages

We will try not to move pages about so any links to pages that you have remain good. We appreciate how difficult it is to keep the links on websites current.

You can link via a text link, your own link or from a graphic. With individual pages can we suggest you use the 'Featured in Photographers Resources' button shown at the bottom of many of our pages including this one. To get a copy of this just right click on the button and use save as to save a copy to your computer. Its on so many pages to make it easy for you to pick up when you want to make a link.

The web address of an individual page can be obtained from the hyperlink on the linking texts to the left of the button where shown. There are a number of other ways to break out of our frames to get an individual page and see its direct web address.

  • If you have an up to date web browser, that opens new tabs, then you can hold down the control key while clicking on any link and the page then goes to a new tab instead of staying within the frame set as designed. Now its in a page of its own, it shows the web address of the page.
  • You can right click on the page, not the heading or contents, and then select create shortcut, this puts a link to the page on your desktop, allowing you to directly access the page but also gives the web address of it.
  • You can use our non frame system, button top right of screen and find the page from another link or in the indexes, this shows individual pages.
  • The 'Bookmark' button's mouse over  facility also has an email  option that you can email yourself a link to the page.

If you can't manage the HTML or need other assistance to link, then please contact us and we will do our best to help you.

Another simpler approach

Many of the sections are having bookmark buttons added, these show the full section, if you use the 'Add this' button and then select something like the google bookmarks it pops up a screen showing you the page link for the section amongst other information. This will show a /index.htm on the end on the web address, this is optional.

Over time we will add more sections here but if you would like to link to a section of our web, then let us know, we may already have a section or we may be able to add one.

Using information off our website

We believe in the cooperative sharing of information, within legal copyright limits.

this means, you can use parts of the information, or the whole page on a non profit website, providing that you say where the information came from, i.e. link back to us and you don't alter the information. This is limited to 10 pages per website, without permission to copy larger sections, so you can't copy our entire website out in total to your website. Generally its better to link to our pages, link them to run in a frame within your site, rather than copy out sections as we can update our pages, but of course would be unable to update any copies.

You will find similar symbols by many photographs within our website and they define the limitations on their use, if a hyperlinked photographers name is shown clicking on that will go to the original copy and restrictions, if not often the symbol will have been linked to the source.

Non profit sites are those that are open to everyone without any fee or registration process, and where the main content is information not heavy advertising content.  It is also non profit if the site is published by a non profit organisation, even if it contains some sponsorship adverts.

You can find out more about Creative Commons, the system that is used to licence pages and photographs, by going to our page on this.

If we have used some information or a photograph and you don't like it

Under the Creative Commons we use information as well as making it available. As this website is published by a non profit organisation, and it does not profit from its publication in any way, this website is a non profit website. Advertising is not sold by us and no income goes to the publisher, this is an arrangement where we have hosting and services in exchange for allowing some advertisements to be included.  However if you have information published under a creative commons arrangement and you don't like us using it, then let us know and as soon as its practical we will remove it and replace it with alternative information. There is of course no copyright on data, so this applies to block content, photographs and illustrations only. You will need to prove who you are, that its your data and provide a way for us to verify this.

There is no copyright in raw data, ideas or individual words or sentences. But there is in layout, blocks of text and images. See our indexes for articles on copyright.

In any other situation please just contact us and let us know your concerns, but consider first if you mind information or images being used. There is little point in you and us spending a vast amount of time looking into and working out who has what rights if there is no objection to its use.
